Rapid City, SD
I have always had an interest in the sciences. As a boy I focused on Astronomy and Archeology/History. As a teenager, my interest turned to weather, but there were few opportunities outside of college courses to study the topic. But at San Francisco State, I took an elective course in Meteorology 101, and I was hooked! I finished my college years at Iowa State, with a B.S. in Meteorology and double major in Speech/Communications. After college I had jobs at TV stations in Raleigh, N.C., New Orleans and Washington, D.C. Then in 1987 I decided to leave the "big city life" and accepted the position of Chief Meteorologist at KOTA TV in Rapid City, S.D.
And then there was my degree from the School of Hard Knocks. In 1993, my wife and I owned and operated Modrick's Travel. For 20 years I served mainly as VP of Sales and Marketing, training Travel Agents in selling and travel, creating sales incentives with travel suppliers, and managing our print and digital advertising.
In addition to serving as Chief Meteorologist, in 2014 I became Director of the KOTA Care and Share Food Drive. I coordinate the stations's promotion of events in the KOTA viewing area that collect or distribute food, collect money and ease Food Insecurity. We work with Church Response, Rapid City Collective Impact, Feeding South Dakota and Youth and Family Services and other organizations. Our biggest fund-raising event is the Bagel in the Street, partnered with Black Hills Bagels, to raise funds for Church Response - In 2018 we raised a record at just over $31,000! Then in 2019 we raised over $39,000!
