RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - The Great Plains Tribal Health Board is promoting the role of fathers for indigenous youth.

The ‘Calling Back Our Fathers’ event took place Thursday at the Ramkota Convention Center, and featured native art and clothing, along with guest speakers talking about the traditional role of Lakota fathers.

Fatherhood Initiative Coordinator Grant Weston says modern society has separated children from traditional family bonding, and he’s happy a coalition is being formed to find a solution.

”In order to fit it in today, we have to find a balance, and that’s what we’re trying to do, is to learn and gather everyone together in order to find what kind of balance we can achieve,” Weston said.

Events took place throughout the day including prayers, family activities, and door prizes. Organizers hope to continue similar efforts in the future.
