A newly introduced toolkit for Rapid City businesses assists both homeless population and law enforcement officers
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - The Rapid City Police Department in conjunction with several groups of non-profits is unveiling a new outreach program with the goal of helping the city’s homeless population access much-needed resources in a way that is both easier and more attainable.
The program aims to assist members of the homeless community in obtaining necessary supplies and support while cutting down on calls to police and other red-tape in the process of getting help when needed.
The program’s central objective involves sharing a “Toolkit” for downtown businesses that will feature a scale system clearly instructing owners and managers of how to appropriately respond to a person in crisis.
The main tenets of the Toolkit involve two steps, with Step One primarily assisting those in need of easily getting basic necessary resources in an organized manner by reaching out to the Helpline Center.
Step Two involves contacting Journey-On, the new non-profit organization, with the integral goal of responding to non-emergency calls for assistance for folks in the homeless population, as well as helping to de-escalate any situations that may arise as a result of life on the street.
Since December, 9 Journey On has handled 120 calls for service. Each one of the calls that the organization handles helps lighten the workload of law enforcement.
