Matthew’s Opera House announces community engagement
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) -The Matthews Opera House and Arts Center champions participation in the arts to inspire and connect the powerful creative force of THE community, enriching lives now and securing A historic cultural legacy for the future.
Blake: Your gallery is putting on a Summer Bingo Challenge. Explain.
Darren: Pick up one of our Summer Art BINGO cards from the gallery (or print it yourself) and grab the supplies
you need. Each card is filled with a variety of art ideas you can complete at home! Complete enough
projects to get a BINGO and you’ll be entered into one of our weekly drawings. And yes, multiple
BINGOs will gain you multiple entries. Win prizes like art supplies and tickets to upcoming shows. You
can help fill your card up by participating in our craft day on June 12, or get a take-home kit on June 24.
Continues all summer. Infor at matthewsopera.com.
2. The Matthews has recently started a humanities committee. How’s that going?
Fantastic! We started the committee in February to focus on books, film, writing, group discussions,
lectures, and other concerns.
The very 1st thing we decided to do was to make last year’s short story contest (that we did while we
were closed for the pandemic) and make it an annual endeavor.
Each person may submit ONE short story AND/OR ONE poem. Stories should be between 500 and
3000 words for adults and between 250 and 1500 for children. Poems may not exceed 60 lines.
All entries must be written based on the contest theme of “origin stories.”
Entries must be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org by June 30. Prizes range from $25 to $75.

3. What’s on tap for your community theater?
We are in the midst of our kids summer theater camp. We started yesterday and will have our
performances on June 25, 26 and 27. Two camps, one for 2nd-6th graders, and one for 7th-12th
graders. Tickets sell out fast for this one. If you’re interested, please visit the shows and tickets page at
At the same time, we are in pre-production for “Alice: Through the Looking Glass,” an original
adaptation by writer/director Joanna Mechaley. This is a fresh take on the story, with theater technology,
magic, sets and costumes all derived from the late 1800′s/early 1900′s. We’ll run this play the 2nd
through 4th weeks in July, Mondays through Wednesdays at 7 pm in the theater. Info and tickets
available on the shows and tickets page at matthewsopera.com
