Accident involving over 10 vehicles happens near Sturgis
STURGIS, S.D. (KEVN) - UPDATE 9 p.m. Jan. 18
More information has been released about the pileup that included five tractor-trailers, one delivery truck, three pickup trucks and three cars.
The initial crash started when a Freightliner semi-truck traveling eastbound on I-90 hit a snowplow that was driving ahead, and then a guard rail. This lead to a secondary crash and pileup that sent four drivers to the Sturgis hospital with minor injuries.
Charges are pending against the driver of the Freightliner, who also experienced minor injuries in the crash.
I-90 eastbound at that location was closed for about three and a half hours.
Law enforcement and first responders are on-scene at an accident involving more than 10 vehicles Monday afternoon near Sturgis.
Around 1:45 p.m. on Jan. 18, five tractor-trailers, a delivery truck, three pickup trucks and three cars were in a multivehicle accident near Exit 30 on I-90. Fuel and engine fluids spilled as a result of the crash. The Department of Environmental and Natural Resources has been notified.
Responding agencies included Sturgis Fire Department, Sturgis Ambulance, Sturgis Police Department, Meade County Sheriff’s Department, South Dakota Highway Patrol, South Dakota DOT and Meade County Emergency Management.
