RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) -Established in June 2019, the mission of the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) Foundation; “supporting the advancement of world class science and inspiring learning across generations” has been implemented across the state with virtual programs.

Staci Miller, newly appointed Foundation Director, said “board of directors at SURF created the Foundation to bring the science discovered from the laboratory to the classroom.”

Their commitment to K-12 education encourages children to see themselves as scientists, researchers, and engineers. The Education & Outreach department brings the science at Sanford Underground Research Facility alive in classrooms across South Dakota.  The curriculum is bases on South Dakota Science standards and is available free of charge to teachers.

Since COVID, classroom presentations, field trips and lessons are being transitioned to a virtual platform as well as the summer professional development instruction for teachers.

South Dakota Community Foundation donated $10,000 this fall to support the transition of STEM education to a virtual format.
