The Sturgis boys' basketball team earned just one win all of last season. But Tuesday night, the Scoopers were on the verge of capping off a remarkable turnaround as they are just one win away from a trip to the state tournament. Sturgis hosting Mitchell in a Region 2 play in game. Early in the first, Seth Bachand was locked in.Off the miss, the junior grabs the rebound and puts it in plus the foul.The Scoopers start the game off with the three-point play. A little later, Bachand working down in the post as he hits the fade-away jumper. Sturgis up 5-2 early. On the other end, Mitchell down one now.Sam Fosness with the cross-over as he pulls up and hits the 'J' to put the Kernels on top 6-5.A little later, Mitchell working from the inside out as Brett Victor finds Nick Young for the long two.Sturgis needs a time out as they trail 10-5. Next Scooper possession, Joey Olson gets a look from behind the arc.The senior connects as Sturgis climbs to within two.The Kernels going back to the post now.Victor goes baseline as he puts this off the glass to extend the Mitchell lead to 14-10.Late in the first now, Sturgis down six.Olson goes into the lane and gets the off-balance shot to drop. But Mitchell was just too much as the Kernels end Sturgis' season with a 74-58 win.
