Rapid City, SD The hallways at South Canyon Elementary were empty today as students competed in their field day Summer Olympics.

Twelve classes represented one of the countries competing in the Summer Olympics in Rio.

The students enjoyed the end-of-the-year celebration by getting a chance to be an Olympic athlete.

Twelve six-minute stations were designed to get the students outside and excited for summer.

5th grader Maya Hughes explains why she thinks it's important to celebrate the end of the year.

Hughes says, "Because like to make sure to have a good year at the end like to finish the year off on a good note, basically. And also to have fun for the 5th graders leaving - like me."

Faculty thought the celebration was a success with the turnout of family and friends.
