SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A bill filed in the South Dakota Legislature would make the office of state agriculture secretary an elected position rather than one filled by a governor's appointment.
Sponsors say it would make the secretary accountable to voters and to the agriculture community.
The ag secretary would be elected to a four-year term and run as a nonpolitical candidate without endorsement of a political party.
The bill specifies that the two candidates receiving the most votes in the June primary would go on to the November general election starting in 2012.
