RCPD keeps eye out for homeless during winter weather

By  |

When it comes to helping the homeless in the cold, it's common to think of shelters such as the Hope Center and the 24 hour Cornerstone Rescue Mission.
However law enforcement has a hand in helping those displaced as well.
Our Briana Brownlee went on a ride a long with a local police officer to get a behind the scenes look at how officers help.
< "Going to be checking under different bridges, just driving along the bike path some common places people try to stay."

WHEN THE TEMPERATURES DROP, POLICE AWARENESS FOR THE HOMELESS GOES UP...

" Get them out of the cold is what we want, we don't want people to die of exposure."

OFFICER MATTHEW HUSEFELDT IS ONE OF THE MANY OFFICER WHO TAKES PART IN THE HOMELESS OUTREACH TO HELP THOSE DISPLACED TO FIND SHELTER

"Down there, you can actually see a lot more from the top of junction and looking down this way and I didn't see anybody down there either so no one here needs our help"

ACCORDING TO HUSEFELDT THE MOST POPULATED AREAS FOR THE HOMELESS ARE DOWNTOWN RAPID CITY, THE BIKE PATH AND AREAS AROUND 7TH STREET.

"Downtown it's a big hangout place for some of our homeless people , I believe on seventh street I believe there are stairs down there that keep people shielded from the wind.

Nat pop: footsteps

"Not a lot of people go underneath, there is a path that goes along the other side so people frequently go through that, but a lot of people aren't going on the other side of the bridge to see if there is anybody down there that needs help...so"

BUT SOMETIMES THE JOB IS EASIER SAID THAN DONE.

"We'll take people to detoxt, some people they don't want to go to detox they don't want to get help, they don't like us for some reason.

HUSEFELDT ALSO STRESSED THAT THE PUBLIC IS A MAJOR ASPECT TO HELPING OFFICERS FIND SHELTER FOR THOSE IN NEED.

"Anybody can call for any reason, we can always check it out if it turns out to be nothing, then we just go on to the next call essentially. If someone sees something suspicious or something out of the normal , definitely give us a call and we will check it out.
