Cobblers' Young wins three at Last Chance

The South Dakota State Track and Field Meets are looming on the horizon May 25th and 26th in Sturgis, Spearfish and Rapid City and the area's Class AA schools got one final chance to hit that state qualifying mark today at the Last Chance Meet at Woodle Field in Sturgis.

Up to Sturgis we go and let's just be really honest, there aren't many prettier places to hold an event than the Jeff Smit Memorial Track, and the weather certainly cooperated today.

First up we've got the girls' 200-meter dash and Rapid City Central's Hannah Young looks to be firing on all cylinders heading into the state meet as she easily cruises to the win here in 25.39 seconds. Young won the 100, 200 and 400 on the day.

Next, it's Sturgis' Gavin West going up and over 12-3 in the pole vault. West took third behind Central's Dylan Hay and Stevens's Jake Person in that event but did win the boys' 110 and 300-meter hurdles. Hay was a double winner after going 13-3 in the pole vault and 6-6 in the high jump.

Sticking with the Scooper theme here, we've got the start of the boys' 800-meter run and Sturgis junior Ethan Brenneman comes down the homestretch and holds off the rest of the field to pick up the win in 1:57.71.

We close things up with Sturgis jumper Ashlyn Simons in the girls long jump as she goes 15-11.5, and my apologies to winner Sarah Keen of Stevens but somebody walked into the shot on your winning jump of 16-10 and three quarters.
