Woman draws 40-year sentence for murder of child

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - The woman who pleaded guilty to murdering a 31-month-old child in February of 2015 was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison Friday.

Over the course of four months beginning in October 2014, Lori Wisecarver repeatedly abused the child, who was put in her care after the child’s mother lost custody. The abuse was largely motivated by potty-training issues.

In a plea agreement earlier this year, Wisecarver admitted to second degree murder to avoid a possible conviction for first degree murder.

The defense asked for a 20-year sentence, citing no prior criminal history for Wisecarver; and that she did not have any issues with raising her own children.

However, the judge went with the prosecution’s request for the 40-year sentence. The prosecution revealed chilling details of the abuse, including instances when Wisecarver rubbed the boy's face in urine and duct taped him to a toilet. The autopsy stated that the child had wounds to every part of his body.
