RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - The Rapid City Police Department and the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office are warning people of a couple of scams in the area.
Callers in one scam say they are raising money for the Fraternal Order of Police’s local lodge. The caller says the money will be used to help with supplemental training for officers. People receiving a call asking for money for the local FOP are encouraged to hang up immediately and not give out any information.
The local lodge for the Fraternal Order of Police does not ask for money over the phone. However, the state level will occasionally call asking about donations, followed up by sending a donation form.
The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office says that scammers claiming to be from the Civil Division are targeting people. Allegedly, the caller says that a call needs to be returned to resolve a court action.
The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office reminds people that they do not collect money over the phone and that people paying a fee would do so in person.
