Students show their individual music skills during Solo and Ensemble Festival

Rapid City,SD Students in high schools from Harding County all the way to Hot Springs competed in the solo and ensemble music festival Wednesday.

These kids put in hundreds of hours of rehearsal in small groups and solo musical works to earn their rating ... with the highest score being superior.

Students usually practice for the contest outside of class and organizers say it shows their dedication to the arts.

George Dragoo, solo and ensemble organizer says" It's a great opportunity to give them that individual pride in what they are doing and the work they put in to it playing in a big group sometimes, it's important, but they become part of that big group. As a smaller group or a solo then it becomes about them and they have a little more responsibility personally."

The event is sponsored by the South Dakota High School Activities Association.
