Groups ask School Board to revisit facilities policy

Representatives from two after school groups went before the Rapid City School Board tonight requesting their education based programs be allowed to meet in schools after school instead of 6 p.m.

Young Rembrandts, an after-school educational art program and the Girl Scouts asked the school board to revise their facilities policy. They both believe enrollment for their programs would be significantly reduced if parents have to bring their children back to school at 6 p.m.

Young Rembrandts has operated in Rapid City schools after school for several years and pays a fee for using the classrooms. The classes have not started yet this year because of the facilities policy, which was revised four years ago, but did allow exceptions until this year.

No decision was made tonight and the school board has scheduled a special study session for October 13th to discuss this issue.
