Rapid City ammo company nets $50 million military deal

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN TV) - A Rapid City ammunition manufacturer was awarded a $49.9 million military contract this month.

Black Hills Ammunition will, over five years, produce 5.56mm special ball long range rifle rounds for the U.S. military.

According to a U.S. Department of Defense release, the ammunition will be used by U.S. forces “engaged in combat involving the war on terror in various overseas operations.”

The contract also involves foreign military sales to Jordan.

Black Hills Ammunition, which employs about 70 people, has a steady history supplying U.S. forces with special ammunition. It’s MK262 round is favored by many military snipers.

The company also supplies ammunition to police departments as well as hunters, sport shooters and various weapons manufacturers.
