Police motorcycle giveaway donates to youth programs

The youth of Sturgis benefited from a police bike giveaway at the Rally on Saturday.

Folks bought raffle tickets for a chance to win a 2015 Harley-Davidson police motorcycle.

Proceeds from the raffle go to the non-profit organization Sturgis Police Athletic League.

The league helps kids in the community by providing equipment to the local boxing classes and mountain biking program.

Sturgis Chief of Police Geody Vandewater says, "I think if we start these programs and get these children involved not only in the community but also with our police department at a young age, we can help to deter some of our crime, some of our vandalisms, and give them that foundation that may be lacking and make them successful in life."

Chief Vandewater says community support has been great.

The winner was not present during the announcement, but Vandewater says they did leave him a voicemail.
