(CNN) - The new, advanced stealth submarine is set to join the U.S. Navy fleet amid undersea rivalry.
The USS South Dakota was christened Oct. 16 and will begin sea trials before joining the fleet sometime in 2018.
Some military experts believe the new U.S. submarine, named for South Dakota, could give the U.S. the edge against North Korea.
South Dakota is already a major player in any confrontation with North Korea. Several B-1 bombers and hundreds of airmen from Ellsworth Air Force Base are in the pacific, flying show of force missions from Anderson AFB, Guam.
