The school year is entering its first full week of classes, and to ensure every student has a new pair of shoes one local organization is putting the right foot forward.
Mommy's closet was handing out 300 pairs of shoes to local children and their families this afternoon at the Volunteers of America office.
The idea to give out the shoes came from a Day in the Park event that was hosted this summer and was funded due to the generous donation of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Rapid City.
For those who helped with the event knowing they were able to help families who often time have to make tough decisions when the school year arrives, helps make their day.
Denise Blomberg says, "what we do never gets old. The smiles you know that volunteers are coming together to serve others may make an impact on that child that we will never know. Shoes are one of the most expensive things that families need to get kids for school. Often times they are making choices as far as feeding their families, or putting shoes or clothes or backpacks or any of those necessities that kids and families need"
The event was open to those who visit mommy's closet and reregistered.
Mommy's closet hopes to continue the event in the future.
