The Spearfish Police Department is releasing more details about the fire that took the lives of five children on April 1st.

In a release Thursday afternoon, police say the fire started in the southeast corner of the east facing porch of the residence at the intersection of Ames and Oliver Streets.
There was a 20-gallon metal trash receptacle in that area used for ash and hot coals from the interior fireplace.
The release says that area was also used for the disposal of cigarette smoking materials from the occupants of the east unit.
They can't say which actually started the fire.
There were no wiring or electrical appliances in that area.
