Most places are recognizing the New Year's holiday for Monday, and it may be a good day to just camp out indoors. Early morning snow is likely, especially north and west of the Black Hills. The highest accumulations will be in northwest South Dakota, southeast Montana, and southwest North Dakota. Expect 1-3 inches through that area. To the south, anywhere from a dusting to an inch is possible.
An arctic air mass really settles into the area on Monday night. High temperatures will be in the single digits above zero with sub-zero overnight lows through a good chuck of the upcoming week.
A blocking pattern will keep that cold airflow in place leaving us with well below average temperatures for the start of January.
