Meals program gets new wheels

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) - As part of their 50 years of operating in the U.S., Subaru of America, Inc, donated 50 specially-wrapped 2018 Subaru Outback vehicles to various Meals on Wheels programs across the nation.

Meals on Wheels of Western South Dakota, located here in Rapid City, was a recipient and the only one in South Dakota; just in time for winter.

"This allows us to go to those individual homes to get to those people that wouldn't otherwise be able to get their meals, especially if we have volunteers that are delivering meals that their car may not have four wheel drive,” said George Larson of Meals on Wheels Western South Dakota.

The 50 vehicles donated will proved more than 50,000 meals to almost 4,000 seniors across 39 states. This allows Meals on Wheels to expand their footprint to places they wouldn’t normally go.

"Now we have a dependable vehicle that can make sure they can reach those seniors no matter where they are so our volunteers and are seniors can connect,” said Larson. “They get that friendly visit, they can get that food they so desperately need as well as that safety check that helps them stay in their homes.”

The first meal delivered in the new vehicle went to Keystone.
