Legal and Finance Committee takes the next step to move toward a new arena

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KEVN) Wednesday marked another step checked off the To-Do list -- for the new Civic Center arena.

The legal and finance committee approved a standard business agreement between mayor Steve Allender, the city council -- and the architecture firm, Perkins and Will, to continue with the design process.

Perkins and Will worked on the Denny Sanford premier center in Sioux Falls and the target center renovations in Minneapolis.

With an idea of the eventual completion date in mind, continuing the design phase of the civic center project was a top priority.

Darrell Shoemaker says, "Now we are going to be moving into the design phase. That's going to take us well into 2019 so this is a formal agreement between the owner, the city, and Perkins and Will so get that design work moving forward in earnest."

The next step is to sign a contract with the construction manager at risk.

The goal is to have the arena completed by 2021.
