South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard says he's appointing Meade Schools superintendent Don Kirkegaard as the next South Dakota Secretary of Education.
He'll be taking over for Dr. Melody Schopp, who is retiring effective December 15th.
Kirkegaard has been superintendent of the Meade School District since 2011.
Before that, he was a social studies teacher and principal in Bristol and then a principal and superintendent in Britton.
He also now currently serves as president of the South Dakota Board of Education Standards.
Kirkegaard takes over his new job on January 1st.
