Construction is entering its next phase for the I-190 interchange project.
So far, the southbound lanes of the interchange have been worked on. Now traffic will shift so the northbound lanes of I-190 can be completed.
The interchange is expected to be mostly completed by July -- with a small phase ramping up after the 2017 Sturgis rally, and closing out in October.
Project engineers say the new interchange will make a big impact on commutes in the area.
Project engineer John Gerlach says, "The old interchange was a non-functioning diamond type of interchange. The old ramps used to go by city neighborhoods and by an elementary school, Horace Mann. With the new interchange, it will just help with the connectivity to the city roadway system and help more traffic a lot more efficiently there."
A new road closure is now in effect, West Boulevard North from Van Buren Street south to Fillmore Street will be closed until mid-April.
