Firefighters optimistic about Legion Lake Fire progress

CUSTER STATE PARK (KEVN) - Firefighters are getting the upper hand on the Legion Lake Fire, which is now 53,875 acres and 50 percent contained.

The fire is expected to be most active in the southern area that is north of Buffalo Gap and east of Highland Ridge Road in Wind Cave National Park. Fire spotting is still a threat in the south and southwest ends of the fire.

According to Custer State Park, mop up operations and patrolling of the fire perimeter will continue Friday and through the weekend.

Because of the progress, more firefighters are being released and Saturday, Rocky Mountain Team Blue will transfer command back to a local team.

Two heavy air tankers are also released but a helicopter remains on scene for aerial reconnaissance.

Custer State Park was still closed to the public.
