ELLSWORTH AFB, S.D. (KOTA TV) - Approximately 250 Christmas trees are set to arrive Dec. 1 with the first picks being made available to the families of deployed airmen from 1 to 2 p.m. at Ellsworth Air Force Base.
The trees, courtesy of The Christmas SPIRIT Foundation, will be delivered to the 28th Force Support Squadron Outdoor Recreation office where volunteers will help unload them.
FedEx delivers the trees to military bases throughout the U.S. and overseas. Christmas tree farmers from Wisconsin donated the trees that FedEx is transporting for free as a way to say “thank you” to military members for their service.
This is Ellsworth's ninth year participating in the program. In addition to providing the trees to families of deployed Airmen, others serving at Ellsworth, soldiers from the South Dakota National Guards and Douglas School Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets are also eligible to receive a free Christmas tree.
