Governor Dennis Daugaard is back from the meeting of the National Governors Association in Washington, DC.
While he was there, Daugaard says he met with Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke.
One of the things he says they discussed is the funding for the link between the Mickelson Trail and Mount Rushmore, something Daugaard says they've been working on for at least five years.
Gov. Daugaard says, "And we're hoping to make some progress this year on that on an alternative route. The original routes were not being supported, so we've identified an alternative route and hope we can make some progress on that. And he expressed a willingness to support me in that regard."
The original plan included building between 15 and 17 miles of non-motorized trail.
