Custer State Park wildfire prompts more evacuations

CUSTER STATE PARK, S.D. (KEVN) - The Legion Lake Fire has crossed over the Wildlife Loop, moving east of Custer State Park and forcing more evacuations. This is according to a post on the park’s Facebook page Tuesday night.

The Custer County Sherriff’s Office has expanded evacuations to Cobb, Downen, Dry Creek and LH Roads, west of Highway 79. Custer County Search and Rescue is reportedly helping with evacuations, according to the county’s emergency management office.

Earlier, Custer State Park posted that fire activity increased because of wind gusts in the French Creek Natural Area, creating spot fires.

The fire, at 4,000 acres, is now at least 7 percent contained.

Custer State Park and roads in the park are expected to be closed now through at least Friday, Dec. 15.
