Crews knock down Box Elder grass fire

BOX ELDER, S.D. (KEVN) - A grass fire scored about 10 acres near Box Elder Tuesday morning.

According to Pennington County fire administrator Jerome Harvey, the fire started just off of Highway 14-16, with dry grasslands contributing to a quick spread of the flames.

“The fire we had a pretty active smoke column. It could be seen from several miles,” Harvey said. “911 did receive several phone calls on the fire. We had two to three foot flame lengths on this fire."

Several county fire departments were called out to battle the blaze.

The cause of the grass fire is currently under investigation.
