Black Hills National Forest campground sites officially open

Thirty campgrounds and more than 680 sites within the Black Hills National Forest are now open for use.

Friday's rainy, snowy, and chilly weather made for lighter than usual activity on those campgrounds, including at Sheridan Lake. As warmer weekends, Memorial Day, and the summer holiday comes closer, those spots will quickly fill up.

Recreation Forester for the Black Hills National Forest Amy Ballard says, "I think that this year will be about the same for renting campsites, and for availability of those campsites. Of course, it all depends on the weather, and opening weekend, now it's raining and so you won't have a problem at all of getting that campsite, but on really sunny, hot, nice weekends we do tend to get pretty full."

Forest Service campground sites range from $14 to $26 per night.
