Art Beat: It's time for a musical comedy at the Firehouse Theatre

With Valentine's Day just behind us and spring in the air, it's the perfect time for a romantic comedy.

In this week's Art Beat it's a celebration of the mating game, and for those who dare to ask, "Hey, what are you doing Saturday Night?"

Actors on the FIrehouse Theatre's stage are putting the finishing touches on a play that almost everyone will relate to.

The show's tagline is "Everything you have ever secretly thought about dating, romance, marriage, lovers, husbands, wives and in-laws, but were afraid to admit."

In I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, five actors take us through an overall arc to relationships throughout the course of one's life.

Leslie Villa, actress, says "We all play lots of different characters. I myself play 13 different characters, which is a lot because you are constantly changing from one scene to the next, make it a lot of fun."

The quick changes are something the actors are working to perfect this week since they just started with costumes, but the music is right on.

For the director, finding actors who could carry the musical part of the play, was key.

Jan Swank, Director says "The music is difficult. It doesn't seem that if you are watching but I know from the rehearsals that it's different to get and it requires a lot of practice."

The realistic play is told through a series of vignettes, with humor right along side most of them.

I Love You, You're Perfect, Now change is a modern musical that ran in New York for more than 5,000 performances and has been translated into at least 17 languages.

Jan Swank, Director, says "Most of the musical revue kind of musical comedies maybe last a season or two and then they're done. This one has lasted since the only 90's with updating of course, but it's still popular through out the country as long as your can find the people to sing it."

This show perfect for date night or a night out with friends starts their five week run tomorrow.

I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change runs weekends through March 18th.

Tickets are available at The Firehouse WineCellar and advance reservations are recommended.
