Spearfish chemistry teacher winds SDEA award

PIERRE, S.D. (KEVN) - A Spearfish chemistry teacher has been named the South Dakota Education Association’s 2018 SDEA Teacher of Excellence.

Jessica Zwaschka has taught 26 years with 20 years at Spearfish High School. Zwaschka created Slime Day which aims to teach kindergartners and high school juniors that science can be learned at any age.

According to the SDEA, Zwaschka will be nominated for the National Education Association Foundation Awards for Teaching Excellence. Criteria for the award are: outstanding professional practice, association advocacy, community engagement and leadership in professional development.

“Jessica has a true passion for her students and profession,” said SDEA President Mary McCorkle. “She shares her love of science and chemistry by creating a classroom that is full of energy and hands on learning.”

Zwaschka will travel to Washington D.C. to attend the NEA Foundation 2019 Salute to Excellence in Education Gala in addition to receiving a $1,000 grant from SDEA.
