And when you combine these frigid temperatures with brisk winds you get very dangerous wind chills. When it gets this cold, Rapid City Regional Hospital says you should limit your time outdoors to only 30 minutes. And when you do have to be outdoors, Regional Hospital says you need to pay special attention to making sure any exposed skin is covered.Dr. Patrick Tibbles says, "Also, make sure if you're out in the cold, that you do cover your head, as 25 percent of body heat loss occurs through the scalp."Dr. Tibbles says one big misconception is that if you drink alcohol it will help keep you warm when you're outside. He says alcohol consumption actually dilates the blood vessels, which will make you even more prone to the cold.
