South Dakota is getting more than $1.3 million from the U.S. Department of Justice to hire or rehire law enforcement officers. And the bulk of that money is pegged for this area.
Officials say $823,000 of the money is allocated to the Rapid City Police Department, with $186,000 for the Pennington County Sheriff's Office and $165,000 for the Box Elder Police Department.
The grants pay for the salaries and benefits for entry level officers or officers who are being re-hired for three years. To get the money, the department would then be required to fund those positions for a fourth year.
