SD officials warn about high mercury levels in state lakes
Wednesday, 31 August 2011 12:04
State officials are cautioning residents about mercury in fish in several South Dakota lakes; among them, pike over 18 inches in Butte County's Newell Lake, and northern pike over 25 inches in Perkins County's Coal Springs Reservoir.

The state issues consumption advisories when test results show mercury levels higher than 1 part per million in fish. That's 10 times lower than the lowest levels associated with neurological damage from mercury poisoning, but officials still urge people who eat the fish to space out meals to guard against mercury accumulation.
