Building permits run ahead of previous years
Monday, 18 June 2012 12:25
In spite of a soft real estate market in other parts of the country, the pace of new construction in Rapid City is rising.  A new report from the city's Community Planning and Development Services shows both unit counts and valuation of the new properties being developed are considerably higher at this point of the year than in previous years.

The new figures that cover the year up to the end of May show $102 million dollars worth of total permit valuation, which is nearly as much as for the entire years of 2009 or 2010.   Brett Limbaugh says, "Already, we've hit a permit total that I think is pretty remarkable. And whether or no that continues on through the end of the year we have got to see.   But if it does this we will more than double what we did last year residential-wise."  Limbaugh says the lack of large-scale speculation in the South Dakota real estate market has preserved the value of local properties, which in turn has encouraged developers to continue construction.
