Firefighters, medics on the go in Sturgis

Perhaps the higher traffic counts are a good indication of why numbers are up for the Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department. They are on the front line during the rally taking hundreds of calls from people who need help.

The fire department and ambulance service started keeping track of calls last Friday. As of midnight this Friday, the fire department responded to 83 calls. The ambulance service has been sent out 150-times, up from 121 at this time last year.

Ambulance director Shawn Peterson says, "We have a six-man crew on 12-hour shifts. We switch at 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., and they're running pretty much non-stop. Our night crew hasn't been getting much sleep at all."

The city's fire chief says the biggest concern and obstacle they have is traffic and getting to the scene safely.
