Officials ask the public to make water safety a priority this summer

After a local teen's recent drowning at Deerfield Lake first responders are urging people to keep water safety in mind this summer. Rescue officials say before you head out to the waterfront, make sure you know how to swim and that you have a life jacket available.

They say make sure you travel in groups and practice the buddy system. Lt. Brent Long with the Rapid City Fire Department says even if you're traveling with a buddy have someone on shore who knows you're on the water.

Long says, "A really good rule of thumb is to always go with somebody when you're going to be in the water. Have that buddy system, have the 2 in, 2 out thing going, but secondary to that, have somebody that knows exactly where you're going to be, what your activities are, and how long you plan on being in that area."

Long also reminds people that even though air temperatures are in the 90s water temps are still much colder and hypothermia is always a risk.
