A department spokesman says they're aiming to beat last year's total of $34,000 dollars, all of which went to help South Dakota kids. Lt. Brent Long of the RCFD says, "They may need special equipment, or things set up in their homes to be able to help a child move around. It can go toward research. One of the big things it goes toward is summer camps, where kids get to go out and experience some of the things we take for granted." After Day 1, firefighters have collected more than $7,000 dollars. Donation locations are set up around town, including the Rapid City Walmart, Baken Park, and the Common Cents on Mt. Rushmore Road.
