Fire department's plan to expand moves forward
Wednesday, 29 February 2012 12:34
The Rapid City Fire Department is one step closer to acquiring a piece of property that would allow the department to expand. The city's Legal and Finance Committee on Wednesday approved the reallocation of $1.4 million for the department to purchase land to build a new main station.

The land sits just across the street from the department's current administration building and fire station at the corner of Main Street and East Boulevard.

The city's fire chief says they weren't asking for additional funding; they simply want to shift the money they had in place to build a new facility.

Chief Mike Maltaverne says, "Having this right across the street from our existing administration building and fire station, it's a proven location for us and obviously fire departments being the business of emergency response are very much driven by response times and location. Location is everything for us."

The Rapid City Council will now hear the request at Monday night's meeting.
