Box Elder student gathers donations for Afghanistan youngsters

An idea from a Box Elder elementary student will help an orphanage a half-a-world away with items most kids in the U-S take for granted.  Eight-year-old Lauren Reil came up with the idea after her dad came home from a deployment in Afghanistan.

Lauren was so moved by the stories her father told of poverty and an orphanage, home to about 230 children, she decided to take matters into her own hands.  She challenged her third grade class to bring in items like pencils, crayons and small toys.  Jason Reil says, "There's very limited foods. Obviously they're scraping for food and clothing so obviously they don't have toys or anything like they collected. We did go on a mission to get them food from the bazaar, materials so they could make their own clothes, school supplies, that kind of stuff."  Lauren's idea quickly spread from her class to a school wide drive.  The items will be sent to a remote part Afghanistan.
