Forest crews start 1,700-acre prescribed burn

A fire is burning about 1,700 acres in the Black Hills, but it's one fire officials welcome. A prescribed burn is taking place in the Lemming Draw area. The U.S. Forest Service, in conjunction with several fire fighting agencies, lit fires by land and by air in an area about 11 miles west of Hill City on Friday.  The goal is to burn off small limbs and other brush in an effort to reduce fuel for a potential large wildfire, and to help promote healthy growth in the area.

Fire Management Officer for the Black Hills National Forest Todd Pechota says, "The objectives of the burn are to re-introduce fire to a landscape that's shaped by fire. Ponderosa pine needs fire to mature, to thin it, to promote vegetative diversity."
