City Council hashes out 2012 budget

Rapid City Council members have until October 1st to approve next year's city budget, and they're going through every page and every department. The second reading of the budget was approved in an 8 to 2 vote at Monday night's council meeting.

Rapid City Mayor Sam Kooiker said Tuesday the city had been spending reserve funds, which Kooiker says he and council members were unaware of until he took office. Also, the mayor says the Police Department and Street Department are both receiving more money in the 2012 budget.

The council has set aside an additional $106,000 for the Police Department because Chief Steve Allender anticipates there will be a shortfall in that department's budget next year.

Streets will receive a little more than $160,000 more for next year as well.

Council member Bonny Peterson says the biggest impact for residents in the 2012 budget is the 2.1% property tax increase due to the Consumer Price Index rate of inflation.
