Rapid City Fire officials say a plane en route from Phoenix to Chicago landed safely Friday night at Rapid City Regional Airport after experiencing mechanical problems in the air. The American Airlines flight had 131 passengers and five crew members on board. A spokesperson for the airline told FOX Chicago an indicator light in the aircraft showed that oil was not feeding properly through the engine. She said that since the plane can fly for a certain period of time with only one engine, the pilot elected to shut down the engine with the problem to prevent further damage and land the plane. The pilot did so without incident in Rapid City. Lt. Brent Long says the Rapid City Fire Department responded with full standby. -Staff |
