GF&P reminds anglers about ice house rules

The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department is reminding anglers that all ice houses must be removed from the ice. As February comes to an end, ice conditions across the state begin to weaken and crack.

So the GF&P is urging ice fishermen to use extreme caution when removing their ice houses, which must be removed by 12:01 a.m. Thursday.

GF&P Conservation Officer Jeff Edwards says, "Sometimes anglers will return at the end of February, ice conditions we might have some melting and ice structures can get, you know, ice shacks can get, they might melt and freeze into the ice making it difficult to remove. Sometimes the ice conditions get poor and they can't get back out to them and that can create some unsafe ice conditions as conditions are changing and it makes it easier for removal."

Shelters may still be used, but they must be removed daily. If the permanent ice houses are not removed by midnight Thursday, anglers could face a class two misdemeanor.
