Maybe they did, but couldn't get all the strings pulled. Whatever the case, it happened Sunday in Deadwood, complete with a chili cook-off, a best-dressed fan contest, the Deadwood Cowboy Cheerleaders, and of course, lots of beer. Some folks came up specifically for the Party. Some simply stumbled in on it after traveling quite some distances, and thought they got lucky. And you can't have a Super Bowl Party without the biggest TV you can get your hands on; in this case a twenty-four foot jobby held up by steel frames and braces, right there on Main Street. Can't have a tailgate party without a couple of footballs to throw around. And in the football toss, the guy driving the golf cart may have wished he was back on golf course. Black Hills native Don Dutton, who spent four years with the Colts and Cowboys was watching. He said he unfortunately didn't see any recruiting possibilities on Main Street. But he had some observations on the upcoming game. If this was South Dakota's Largest Tailgate Party, it was also the luckiest. The weather turned out to be perfect, everything worked the way it was supposed to, and the fans showed up. So this probably won't be the last. Once you get something like this started it's hard to stop. Al Van Zee |
