AmeriCorps members say they wanted to make the most of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day by serving in the community. Since the food bank wasn't open on the holiday, they got right to work on Tuesday.
One member says they're asked to volunteer throughout the year.
Derek Dalen says, "It gets us involved especially with the BackPack Program, we're helping out now. It provides food for kids over the weekend who might not otherwise have access to a healthy nutritious meal. So serving at the Food Bank, we get an opportunity to help the community and it's outside of our typical AmeriCorp Vista duties."
AmeriCorps members say although they each represent different organizations, they came together as a community to serve others who need it most.
