WIND CAVE NATIONAL PARK, S.D. (AP) _ Crews at Wind Cave National
Park are making preparations for a prescribed burn on 617 acres
within the park sometime this fall.
The park in southwest South Dakota has been intentionally
burning some areas each year to replicate natural fires that remove
dead vegetation, rejuvenate the grass and help maintain a balance
between forest and prairie.
Officials say the fire will be started only when weather
conditions are favorable.
The burn area represents about 2 percent of the park's 28,295
acres.
