A Rapid City neighborhood received quite the scare Saturday morning after a mountain lion was spotted walking down the street. The 76-pound male lion was first spotted by Christina Wood while at her neighbor's yard sale on East Tallent Street.
Wood says her first instinct was to locate her children and then call 911.Christina Wood says, "He didn't seem like he was, he was just running up the street like he didn't even see anybody. He was just tunnel vision running up the street... Everybody's just really shocked that there was a mountain lion in this area."This is video from a Rapid City Police car's dashboard video camera. When authorities arrived around 8:45 Saturday morning, the lion was in a tree at the intersection of East Indiana and Hawthorne Streets. The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department was called in to shoot the cat because of the danger it posed. After escaping several times, the lion was finally located in the backyard of this East Ohio Street house belonging to Rapid City Councilman Ron Weifenbach ... who was not home at the time.An officer climbed onto the roof of a neighboring house in order to shoot the animal. No was injured and no property was damaged. The mountain lion was given to GF&P for research. |
